Creating a Plan to Live With Purpose, Passion, and Freedom
Brendon Burchard once said, “People are remarkably bad at remembering long lists of goals…the longer their lists of to-dos and goals, the more overwhelmed and off-track they got. Clarity comes with simplicity.”
Three is the Magic Number
Focusing on the top three goals will allow us to make progress and avoid overwhelm. My colleague Tom Voccola says, “You can do anything, but can’t do everything.” This is so true.
To succeed in reaching your desired outcomes, prioritize your three goals and then commit the time and energy to attain these outcomes. These goals can be for the week, the month, the quarter, or even the year. They can be personal (such as lose 20 pounds), relationship (find that loving partner), or business-related (reach sales goals that double last year’s targets).
The key to peace and happiness is to choose goals that matter to you.
Enlist the 90-Day Plan
My clients and I use a 90-day plan, which aligns nicely to quarters of the year, to keep our eye on the ball––our goals. The way to get started is by asking: What am I accountable for completing in the next 90 days?
Accountability can be to your organization, your partner, or even to yourself. Either way, you might want to engage the assistance of an accountability partner to keep you on track.
It’s also important to keep your goals visible––either in your planner, on your smartphone screen, or on a 3 x 5 card in your wallet.
Celebrate Your Wins!
At the end of 90 days, I always make time to celebrate for my own accomplishments and with my clients. By reviewing the progress on our goals, we can acknowledge our wins, learn from what did not work––and then plan accordingly for the next 90 days.
So what three goals will you focus on for the next 90 days? Feel free to share them on my Facebook page.
